Dear Bill,
There would be no Jesus Ice Cream without you. You always knew what I needed right when I needed it the most. When I had no provision you came along and filled my bag. When I had no place to lay my head you provided me a home.

Dear Mimi,
I scream, you scream, we all scream for Jesus, but no one screams for the Lord like a mom who has lost her child. I marveled at your humility and how it became your hope in Christ as you perservered through your loss until the end.

Dear Cabot,
You were my tiger, my crusader for Christ, my loving son who never left my side. Through my adversities, Jesus drew me to Him through my love for you. Jesus Ice Cream was born out of me screaming out for Jesus to take care of you.

Dear Seri,
You were my flame of faith, my bright light that gave me the courage to walk through terrifying darkness. Never forget, my beautiful daughter, how we walked out of the furnace together and not a single hair of ours was cinged.

Dear Hailey,
Nothing heals a family like Jesus Ice Cream and you diagnosed that with us from the very beginning. And you wrote the perfect follow-up prescription by becoming my son's wife and a big sister to my daughter. Nice work, Doc!

Dear Fred,
You heard God's words, listened carefully, and took action based on His instructions. Through your obediance to our Lord, you were then able to provide me with the clarity and resourses I needed to exit this world just as He had ordained it.

Dear Kathy,
You cared for me as if I were your only son, the one you lost. I embraced you as if you were my mother, the one I lost. Together, in Christ, you and I eased each others pain and brought glory to our Lord by carrying on as His family.

Jay in Starkville
STARKVILLE, MS, 5/15/25 -- Jay was slowly fading away when he got his Mississippi State hoodie, but he remained a bulldog for Jesus! Jay's gritty resolve helped him to see his adversity as a chance to share his love of Jesus with everyone caring for him. But I'm the only one who knew how much he loved ice cream and I pondered whether Jay was grasping the significance of the Jesus Ice Cream hoodies.
Jay in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, FL, 5/3/25 -- When Jay's Florida hoodie arrived he wasn't talking and barely eating. But now Jay had four Jesus Ice Cream hoodies and was wearing one every day. No longer able to express himself and his love for Jesus verbally, Jay started sending short text messages to family, friends, and caregivers. One day he texted me, "I don't have much time, where's my Bama hoodie?"
Jay in Fayetteville
FAYETTEVILLE, AK, 5/8/25 -- When Jay got his Razorback hoodie, his hospice caregiver had to put it on for him since he was now too weak to even send texts. To stay in touch, his caregiver had Jay write short messages on a whiteboard, which she would send to people using his phone. Each day, Jay was still dressed in one of his Jesus Ice Cream hoodies and I prayed he would keep holding on to get his crimson one!
Jay on The Bayou
BATON ROUGE, LA, 5/11/25 -- "I scream, you scream, we all scream for Jesus!' I texted Jay one night, knowing his LSU hoodie had been delivered earlier that day. "Where's his Bama hoodie?" Jay's caregiver texted back. "He's so cold and unrespopnsive, he may leave us tonight." This gave me chills of my own as I glanced over at Jay's next shipment, a crimson and white hoodie. Things weren't going as I had planned.
Jay in T-Town
TUSCALOOSA, AL, 5/23/25 -- I was in a real fix. Hunched over on the sofa in Jay's Bama hoodie and wrapped in a thick blanket, I couldn't shake off the chills from hearing that my Crimson Tide buddy was gone. The caregiver had texted and said that Jay went to Heaven wearing his Texas A&M hoodie. He greeted Jesus wearing Aggie maroon and left me here to carry on in Alabama's crimson and white.

Howdy and Roll Tide
I was wearing Jay's Bama hoodie at his wake when his caregiver greeted me. "So you're Jay too," she said, referring to how he had me saved in his phone. "It's an inadverdent nickname, a running joke," I replied. "But, yes, call me Jay as well."
This penniless (Luke 21:1-4) caregiver watched over Jay when his mother couldn't be there. It had become her way of sharing Jesus (Mark 16:15) by volunteering to serve the terminally ill. "Jay had a nickname for me too," the caregiver continued. "He called me Mimi, after his mom, because in her absence, I carried on for her."
Mimi told me that after putting Jay's hoodies on for him so often she started calling me the "Jesus Ice Cream Guy." I said that was fitting because throughout our younger years Jay and I were constantly striving to create a game-changing brand. With Jesus Ice Cream, I had become one (Wikepidia).
"That's fine," Mimi said. "But from now on you'll always be Jay to me. So, how will you carry on for him with the Jesus Ice Cream hoodies now that the Lord has taken him?" (2 Kings 2:1-11) "Well, I'm a storyteller," I answered. "Maybe I can weave Jay's story into mine somehow?"
Way To Go Tigers!
"Jay didn't get a proper send off you know?" Mimi said, smiling like she had an idea for me. "His family was so worried about keeping him alive that they didn't hear the Lord's train horn off in the distance." (1 Thessalonians 5:2).
"Maybe you'll weave me into your story too," Mimi said. "Heaven knows how many times I went into Jay's Closet to pick out one of your Jesus Ice Cream hoodies for him because that's all he wanted to wear." She told me her favorite was the LSU hoodie. Turns out, Mimi was a Bayou Tiger!
Mimi went on to share with me that she was terminally ill herself but was perfectly content (Philppians 4:11-13) to keep volunteering to do what she was doing. She said that although she was Jay's happily broke sister in Christ (Hebrews 13:5), she had never experienced such a sense of purpose as she did when she ushered Jay off to Heaven.
"But he didn't go out like a Tiger (Timothy 4: 6-8) did he?" I said. "No he didn't," Mimi answered. "But he got fiesty when you sent that Auburn Tiger hoodie. He spent the whole day scheming to get back at you." We both agreed that although Jay may have died with a whimper instead of a roar, he got the last laugh when I showed up to his wake in a Bama hoodie.
Keeper of His Closet
"I wanted to start a Living Wake for Jay right when we got his diagnosis but his family was too focused on fighting his cancer," Mimi said as we visited the day after his burial. "It would have been an ongoing celebration of his life while he was still here, before we sent him off to the Great Party!" (Matthew 22:1-14)
"Wow, he lived for two more years after his diagnosis," I said. "Had I known, just think how many more Jesus Ice Cream hoodies I could have hung in Jay's Closet." Mimi smiled and shook her head, her big hoop earings swaying with her as she seemed to be celebrating the confirmation of something good. (James 1:17)
"The Lord knew and He's given you a second chance (Jonah 3:1-3) to fill Jay's Closet," Mimi exclaimed. "But Jay's gone," I said. "Is he?" Mimi asked. "You told me about your accidental nickname and how your'e a storyteller. Maybe now you can live as Jay as if living for Jesus?"
Suddenly I had pen name and a story to write and I told Mimi that I would weave her into it all as the keeper of Jay's Closet. "But don't forget to write about my second chance at organizing Jay's living wake." Mimi said. "You're talking about my living wake aren't you?" I asked with trepidation. Mimi gave a foreboding wink and said, "Let's talk about that tommorow, sweetie."
120,000 Hoodies
After Jay's funeral I began to pray fervently to the Lord (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18), that His train would not come roaring down the tracks for me too soon, at least not until I have shared my Jesus Ice Cream hoodies with over 120,000 college kids (Jonah 4:11). Any extra time I might get beyond that I would consider a bonus, like gravy on some Dixie Chicken!
As excited as I was about the Jesus Ice Cream hoodies, I was determined to not be caught off gaurd like Jay, who was completely blindsided by his abrupt departure. As wonderful a Christian man as he was, he and his family had mistakenly brushed aside what the Bible says about how quickly our time with loved ones can pass (Psalm 39:5).
"There's a train a comin' sweetie," Mimi said as she walked up to me in the coffee shop.
